In celebration of summer’s arrival, we have chosen six of our favorite destinations for travel nurses to make a splash this summer. Whether you’re into water activities, wine tastings, garden picnics or air-conditioned museums, we guarantee that one of these six locations will be the perfect place to spend your summer travel assignment.
Long Island, NY
There is no better time than summer to hit the beach, and we’ve got the perfect place for you to work on your tan, enjoy the ocean breeze or post-up under a big umbrella with a good book: Long Island, NY.
Long Island is known for its miles of fine white sand. Spend your off days lounging on the beach, partaking a whale watching excursion or surfing in the comfortable 70-degree ocean water. And don’t forget to take in the breathtaking views during a sunset walk on the boardwalk.
If you’re not the beach bum type, there are plenty of great activities on land. We recommend exploring one or more of their historic gardens. Long Island has several for your enjoyment including Old Westbury Gardens, Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park and Sagamore Hill—just to name a few. Many of Long Island’s gardens have summer concert series and festivals to add to your summer fun.
Philadelphia, PA
If your favorite holiday is the Fourth of July, plan on taking a travel assignment in Philadelphia this summer. Their Independence Day celebrations cannot be beat! To kick off your holiday, head to the Independence Mall on July 3rd for Philadelphia’s Historic District Block Party for food trucks, live performances and more.
On July Fourth, start off at Party on the Parkway which features five blocks of free entertainment, food and drink. Pitbull is headlining this year’s event! After you’re full and happy, continue the party at the Wawa Welcome America July 4th Concert and Fireworks. What’s more American than fireworks in Philadelphia on our nations’ birthday?
Houston, TX
Texas is hot during the summer, but the opportunities for fun in Houston are even hotter. Known for its culinary scene, Space Center and architecture, Houston is a “southern hospitality meets urban chic” city. There are dozens of activities to partake in to fill your summer days. We recommend the Sam Houston Boat Tour. Enjoy scenic views of the Port of Houston on this free, air-conditioned tour.
There are plenty of cultural and educational opportunities to embark on, too, like trips to the Downtown Aquarium, Houston Museum of Natural Science or The Health Museum. After checking out a fine Houston attraction, enjoy a meal at one of the numerous top-rated restaurants. Houston is a foodie’s dream destination!
Jersey Shore
The famous Jersey Shore isn’t just for spray-tanned “guidos” and partygoers on spring break. Similar to Long Island, you’ll find charming historic towns and plenty of entertainment on the boardwalk along the Jersey Shore. From Cape May to Asbury Park to Seaside Heights, there is a different unique town to explore each weekend (or string of off-days!).
Let’s not forget about the top-rated hospitals in Jersey Shore, either. There is no better place to expand your skillset and learn new techniques, all while meeting and learning from new people, than at Jersey Shore.
Vermont
Vermont may seem like the perfect place for winter travel, but let us let you in on a little secret: the maple syrup state is an excellent destination to spend you summer days—especially if you’re an outdoor type. Between hiking, camping, golfing and kayaking, you’re sure to find a summer activity that peaks your interest.
If you love ice cream, beat the summer heat and head over to the Ben & Jerry’s Factory in Waterbury. There, take a 30-minute guided tour and learn how the iconic ice cream brand came to be. And don’t forget to grab a scoop of Chunky Monkey or Cherry Garcia at their Scoop Shop. Ben & Jerry’s is a must-have when in Vermont!
Napa Valley, CA
Did someone say wine? There are over 400 wineries in Napa Valley, making this a great destination for nurses who love a glass--or two--of merlot or chardonnay. Napa Valley is particularly nice in the summer because of its beautiful weather and incredible views. Visiting a winery on a summer evening is a must-do activity.
If wine tastings aren’t your thing, cool off by heading to the northeast corner of Napa Valley to enjoy Lake Berryessa. Here you can enjoy picnicking, watersports and camping. The water is the perfect temperature and the beaches provide wonderful and relaxing views.
At GHR Travel Nursing, we hope your summer will be one for the books. Let us help you book your next unforgettable summer trip today!
