A Season of Giving

Yes, the holiday season is in full swing, though for many of us they are looking a little different than in years past. However, that does not mean they can’t be a joyful, healing time in our lives.

In addition to counting our blessings, simplifying our plans, and making time for ourselves, mental health experts suggest making this a season of giving and goodwill. Charitable giving creates a response in the brain triggering a surge of dopamine and endorphins, which produce rewarding feelings and personal satisfaction.

Bottom line, not only do you make a positive impact on others, you contribute to your overall health and mental well-being.

The benefits of giving.

According to research, even if financial contributions aren’t possible, the act of giving comes in many shapes and sizes – whether it’s your time, donations of unwanted clothes and goods, or simply the way you treat others – and all can have a positive impact on your life, including:

  • Improved life satisfaction: Research shows those who give experience greater satisfaction in life
  • Feel happier: Research also shows people who give enjoy higher levels of personal happiness
  • Improve key health factors: Giving back also has been tied to improved blood pressure, increased cognitive function, and a reduced sense of isolation and depression
  • Lower rates of stress: A greater sense of satisfaction and happiness is linked to reduced levels of stress
  • Community Engagement – Giving creates a sense of community, belonging and encourages personal involvement

Helping you help others.

If you’re interested in giving back this holiday season and want to learn more about some worthy causes to consider, check out our social media pages beginning Monday, December 14th.
